‘Warrior’ Review: A Bruce Lee Vision Brought to Vivid Life

But the rival tong, the Long Xii, is beginning to challenge that supremacy, while the white police force and politicians respond to a growing anti-Chinese sentiment in America. The first episode, written by Tropper and directed by Assaf Bernstein, is a shaky start as it attempts to introduce every major player in the massive cast.

Jagger of Irish malcontents, an ambitious deputy-mayor Langley Kirkwoodand two cops whose principles are tested. And there is plenty of killing. Although the police might use guns, most of the action on screen is close combat, which makes the violence more personal and therefore brutal. Plenty of medium and wide shots allow the performers to show off their skills without visual trickery or gimmicky prop usage, and stunt coordinator Brett Chan is never at a loss for dynamic moves and scenarios.

Less gratifying is the portrayal of women in what is a testosterone-laden show, both in front of and behind the camera.

The writers and directors on the series are all men, an imbalance that can be felt in the storytelling and male gaze. However, for the most part, women are either wives or whores on the show, and this gender inequality can especially be seen in the brothel where full-frontal nudity only applies to the women.

For another, Cinemax. There is a lot of fighting, of many varieties — kung fu and hatchets in the street for the Chinese characters, bare-knuckle brawling for the whites mostly Irishmenand some Wild West gunplay in a stand-alone episode at a stage stop that pays tribute to both John Ford and Tsui Hark.

If I closed my eyes, you could be anyone. Conveniently, one of the primary settings is a brothel. And yet every speaking role for a Chinese woman is a prostitute, a madam or a concubine, and even the lead actresses dutifully shed their clothes, as if paying a Cinemax tax.

You can see the broad, pulp-fiction outlines of the story Tropper has set up. Ah Sahm and Mai Ling, star-crossed brother and sister on opposite sides of the Tong war, will have an eventual reckoning, and Ah Sahm and Leary Dean Jaggerthe monstrous Irish labor agitator, will eventually square off. His typed and handwritten notes certainly anticipated opium dealing and hatchet and martial-arts battles.

Faced immediately with the intense anti-immigrant prejudice of the time, he displays his martial-arts skill in a way that lands him in the employ of one of the local Tongs, run by the dandyish Father Jun Perry Yung. Change the setting and the ethnicities and, for instance, Walton Goggins might once have been able to play a Young Jun type with the same cocky yet endearing energy that Jason Tobin brings to the role now. But even though Warrior never loses sight of the many sociopolitical reflections of today, its primarily goal is to kick ass and take names, which it does splendidly throughout.

Even though its run overlapped with Game of Thrones and a few dozen different comic-book dramas, Banshee consistently had the best-choreographed, most viscerally exciting fight scenes on television. The "Warrior" series follows the story of Ah Sahm Andrew Kojia fighting wiz and hatchet man who tries to figure out where he fits in this new American landscape. He finds himself embedded in a criminal underworld rife with violence, which revolves around a Chinatown gang rivalry known as the Tong Wars.

If this is the first time you've ever heard about the Tong Wars, you're not alone. It's one of many details about Chinatown's history that Shannon Lee — Bruce's daughter, and executive producer on "Warrior" — points to as overlooked.

It's worth noting that the initial treatment of the series was written by Bruce Lee roughly five decades ago. As the legend goes, he presented his idea to American TV execs and was ultimately rejected. Does Shannon Lee believe her father's idea was stolen? That's a conversation for another time. What's glaringly obvious is David Carradine was absolutely not an Asian man. For s America, though, that detail wasn't seen as an issue. As cool as an adventure-of-the-week series starring Bruce Lee sounds, his daughter says the overt racism and cultural conflicts of the time as the biggest reasons he never got the green light.

Shannon adds that she wanted keep the story set in lates Chinatown to honor Bruce's original intentions. And it was all part of his desire to have authentic representation, not just by having an Asian man be in the show, but also by telling these Chinese stories. Shannon Lee admits that making "Warrior" a genre show helps tell a Chinese American story to a wider audience.

Sure, it acts as a history lesson, putting us smack-dab into the gritty streets of turn-of-the-century San Francisco, but it does so with a grindhouse production flair often unseen on the small screen. Basically, it's a mix of "Deadwood" outlaw Western mentality and the gilded age investigative drama of "The Alienist.

And let's not forget the epic fight scenes. Bruce Lee's influence is everywhere in this show, but it's during these beautifully shot sequences that you can really feel his energy.
